The unforeseen popularity of the newly launched iPhone 5s in Gold seems to have set off a new cottage industry in mainland China. Thanks to the surge in demand for this particular version of the iPhone, some ingenious Chinese companies thought that there would be a set of people who would like to turn their old iPhones to look like the new Golden iPhone 5s. Well, that has resulted in the arrival of gold stickers – which for a few dollars would lend your old iPhone the much sought after golden touch!
These stickers are currently on sale across Chinese e-commerce websites like Tabao where they have in a quick span of time become immensely popular. They are also inteoducing cheeky advertising campaigns to promote these stickers by claiming that instead of spending loads of money on the new iPhone 5s, they can actually save a whopping $862 if they opt for these stickers that cost anywhere between $2 and $6. Here’s the text from a similar campaign
“Dear, you don’t need to sell your kidney for the new iPhone. Instead of paying 5288 yuan, you only need to spend 35 yuan to make your iPhone 5 look like a golden iPhone 5S in seconds.”
Gold being a popular metal in China, is being cited the reason for this huge draw towards these golden colored iPhones. It is also seen as a status symbol and if you can enhance your status manifold for as little as $2, why not? It is not just Chinese retailers now that are selling these gold skins, you can also get yourselves one from Amazon!
