Good ol, Windows XP! Remember it? I still recall the day I first saw it and used it on a PC, I was awestruck by the UI – the smooth rounded corners and its flashy looks. Oh, the good ol days! That was circa 2001 and it would be four years later that I would finally own my own PC. Yeah, I was not much of a PC guy till the mid 2000’s.
Anyway, that’s not what we are talking about here. It’s been over 12 years since Windows XP arrived and we have had a bunch of successors to it as well – starting with Windows Vista, Windows 7 and now – Windows 8. Even with the advent of newer operating systems from Microsoft – Windows XP continues to run on millions of PC’s around the world – even today. Microsoft is doing all it can to help these users upgrade to newer platforms since they would officially stop supporting Windows XP in April 2014 – 6 months from now.
But hey, Microsoft’s arch nemesis Google seems to have more confidence on XP than Microsoft themselves. The search giant has revealed that they will continue to “service” PC’s running Windows XP and would keep on providing updates to its popular web browser Chrome and essentially support it for over a year after Microsoft calls it quits. In a blog post earlier today, Google’s Mark Larson, director of engineering and superintendent of public safety for Google Chrome, said that Google would continue to support its Windows XP users using the Windows XP version of their browser until April 2015. By that time, the company hopes that a large percentage of users still on Windows XP would have migrated to newer platforms.
In case you are totally in love with Windows XP and refuse to trade in for Windows 8, you can be rest assured that Google Chrome for your PC will continue to be regularly updated till 2015 – a good two years from now. That said, be aware of the fact that security and other critical updates for Windows XP on the whole will cease starting April 2014.
