Following the foot steps of Apple, Goolge has taken a bold to shut down the Andriod Game category in South Korea as the laws in the country require all the Andriod Games to be reviewed and approved by South Korea Gaming Board, which seems implausible due to the number of games and the the amount of time it would required to review them.
Google held its ground in China for search (SEARCH!!) and they have done it again here in Korea. Google preferred to shut-down game category rather than get pushed around by the Korean Game Board. Android Market has been doing well lately with over 9000 apps added in March alone. Google certainly won’t like to slow down itself (in the race to catchup with Apple’s App Store) and it does make sense for them to concentrate on the bigger game.
Google will take a hit from it at first considering the loss of the potential market, but with Apple & Google cutting of the biggest category for apps this may very well be the wake-up call for the Korean Games Rating Board.
The gaming policy seems ineffective as the users can still access the Andriod Games by switching to the US account but it is certainly a setback for the homegrown bigwigs; Samsung and LG, as these companies have fully endorsed Android and they already sell or plan to start selling Android phones later this year and this step by Google inadvertently limit the features of Android ans hence damages those companies. It will be interesting to see where does the Korean App Market goes from here in the coming time.
