Get Google Talk With Video Calling On Any Gingerbread Phone

Google released the Android 2.3.4  Gingerbread update for the Nexus S and the Nexus One just a few days back, but only the Nexus S was Gtalk was updated to the latest version which also supports video calling. Many people including me were sad about this move made by Google but Google has a valid reason to hold the update of Gtalk for Nexus One as it does not have a front camera.

Well this does not stop our folks on XDA to port the new gtalk on all other devices. Yes the latest Gtalk can be flashed ont your gingerbread device. If you own an Android Gingerbread device which is rooted and has a custom recovery and are looking to work on the new gTalk then you can follow the procedure after the break.

Note:

  • This will uninstall the older version of gtalk app
  • You need root access before performing this procedure
  • You need a custom recovery to flash the .zip
  • You should have Android 2.3 (gingerbread) running on your device

Requirements:

Download the new gtalk.zip from here

Procedure:

  • Download and place the .Zip file inside your SD card or external memory partition of your device
  • Reboot into recovery
  • Apply update.zip from SD card
  • Select the gtalk.zip file from the recovery
  • Accept all the prompts before flashing
  • Reboot device
  • All done now you will have the latest gTalk

I tried it on my Nexus One and it works like a charm. The only problem is that this gtalk app does not detect the rear camera of my device hence the remote user cannot see my live feed but the audio clarity and video clarity on my device from the remote user is just perfect.
