Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) was released back in December and as of now, there is only the Nexus S running this version of the OS with no update yet for Nexus One or any other devices in sight. Google had said that they will be updating the Nexus One to Gingerbread in a week at the D: Dive Into Mobile – but for some reason, it didn’t appear then. Now we learn that Google is working on a 2.4 update which will come out soon.
The Android 2.4 update will still be called Gingerbread but some new APIs will be added and single core devices will be able to run apps designed for dual-core or Honeycomb. This is the reason why manufacturers are not willing to release the 2.3 update for their existing phones and no new devices are coming out with Android 2.3.
Viewsonic said that it will be bringing out Viewpad 4 with Android 2.4 this April, this means that the manufacturers will soon receive the test version of 2.4 and we will be seeing Android version 2.4 in new devices pretty soon.
In any case, Android 2.4 will not be Ice Cream as it will be a part of Gingerbread. We will be seeing more news of Ice Cream during somewhere in Q2 end or Q3 which will be Android 3.1 or maybe Android 2.5 or 4.0. Well nothing can be said now, we have to wait and watch.
