Move over Google, the Indian Driverless car is here. Two professors and fifteen students from an engineering college in Gujarat have managed to control a car through an app. The car can start, change gears, turn and apply brakes all through commands given from an Android app. It requires 3G connectivity to send and receive messages and responds to commands given to it from a remote location.
The headline making prototype was completed in 28 days by fifteen students under the tutelage of two professors from a Sanand based engineering college. The car used for the prototype is the popular Hyundai i10 and can deliver speed up to 100 kmph. The car is equipped with some hi-tech gadgets most notably the six night-vision cameras which are used to prevent accidents. It possesses a screen displaying its route while sensors allow the car’s computer to map its location and surroundings .The car also uses eighteen cost effective sensors for object detection and then takes suitable action to duck objects.
The indigenous driverless car serves a larger purpose though. The car which cost Rs 3 lakh to develop, could be a boon for people with disabilities and transform the marketplace. This particular prototype was specifically developed for the Armed Forces as it also houses a mounted remote controlled gun. College authorities said they are working on using the innovation in other applications as well.
Needless to say the car is inspired by the Google Self Driven Car concept which uses advanced sensors and cameras for driving. The Self driven car has recently been spotted all around the world and is being tested by Google. Recently, reports stated that Apple is also working on a driver less car along with Nissan and General Motors who also plan to launch such cars by 2020.
