Hands-on with Datawind’s UbiSurfer

On the technical front, the UbiSurfer has a 7-inch TFT, Wide Screen Display, 800 x 480 pixels (WVGA), 128 MB RAM, 1 GB Flash Memory, it is supported by an ARM 11 processor and has 50GB of Online Storage which can be expandable by purchasing more online space (however you might find the SD slot handy). It features an Embedded Cellular Modem along with Wireless LAN WiFi IEEE 802.11 b/g and 10BaseT Ethernet Interface. They keyboard and trackpad on the device were anything buy impressive (cramped, insensitive). We didn’t have too much time to spend with these but we seriously hope that one can get used to this keyboard and trackpad. The lithium polymer battery provides you a working time of 3-4 hours which is not great when compared to netbooks. Finally, it has two USB ports, a Push-Push SD Card Socket and an Ethernet Port.

Although, it is not very high on features, it has a decent browsing speed as most of the pages fully loaded in under 10-12 seconds (thats far from the 7 sec claim though). The UbiSurfer browser isn’t the best around but very well integrated . The device is not very attractive to the eyes, the built quality is not that best of-course but considering that it’s a low budget device, its OK. The Media Player is able to play a huge variety of files, and I also checked out the Word and Spreadsheet applications which houses all the basic functions.

The UbiSurfer is something that a netbook was suppose to be, it which features really good internet browsing experience during travel. If you already own a laptop and you want you next device to be richer than your current device I won’t suggest you to buy the UbiSurfer. However, if this the handheld / portable you want for accessing internet on-the-move or you are planning to buy a netbook, the UbiSurfer would be a nice option as it totally serves the purpose. Currently the 3G model is not yet available but it will be available by the end of this year.

Powered by Tata Photon (upto 1Mbps), you can get connected to the Internet directly from the time of purchase of the Datawind UbiSurfer. Distributed in India by Sunrise Distributors it will be available at select retailers for Rs. 7,999/-. This will also include 30 hours of unlimited browsing per month for the first year and for extra Rs. 99/- per month you can have access to unlimited internet.

My camera gave up at the wrong time but gizmo hugs to our friend @kunalgangar (TechTickerBlog) for the pictures.

  • This is one of the recent slew of chinese made “netbooks” being made available. Surf for Alpha-400, Letux-400, RazorBook 3G etc and you’ll know what i mean. A company called IDA is offering a laptop of nearly same configuration but with a MIPS Ingenic Processor. Search for IDA Letux 400. They’re in Jaipur.

However, Im looking for a netbook and might go for something like this. Im not concerned about what OEM software is being made available as im a linux user and will try to install linux on it.

Could anyone tell me if an existing Photon Plus customer can use this netbook without going for a new connection.

  • The UbiSurfer has an inbuilt Photon Whiz modem, and comes with a year of free internet access – you don’t have to go for a new connection

  • Yeah and that gives you 30 hours every month… sounds so 1999. The Rs 99 per month for unlimited is a GOOD offer though!

UBISurfer has launched its new windows version. which gets boots up within 10 seconds and which launches application instantly and adding to the + point this version also provides 30 hours of free internet ever month so you dont need to find the Wi-Fi hot spot if you are traveling or if there is power loss.

  • i purchased datawind ubisurfer on 10.8.10. but services are not good.it is not working for last 10 days. company dealer are only intersted in selling ,not in service.it is disappointing

  • Ubisurfer is a new laptop brand in India. But in UK it is a very famous laptop company with great client support. I trust they will provide the same servicing here in India as well.
There are some things are not yet open. In Particular the buyers are interested about its unlimited Internet plan by paying Rs-99/month. There is no fair details about this on their website. Let us await and find about their progress in India. This is a good product for that price in India.

  • i purchased datawind ubisurfer on 10.8.10. but services are not good.it is not working for last 15days. company dealer are only intersted in selling ,not in service.it is disappointing

  • I PURCHASED ONE ON 10.8.10 FROM BALAJI DISTRIBUTORS JAIPUR.AFTER FEW DAYS OF WORKING, IT IS NOT WORKING FOR NEARLY 20 DAYS. IF SOMEONE IS HAVING 8000RS TO THROUGH AWAY THEN PURCHASE UBISURFER

  • Has anybody used the Ubisurfer for the last 6 months? Are they surely launching the 3G model in December 2010? and will the hardware be better than this one? I would not mind paying a little more i.e. app. 10,000 for better hardware……..ryan
