IIT Bombay’s Techfest kicks off a day after the New Year. This Techfest is the go-to place for geeks knowing the amount of tech stuff on display. One such Tech marvel on display was the Oculus Rift. For those who don’t know- the Oculus Rift is a Virtual Reality headset. Virtual Reality is a computer generated simulation environment and the Oculus Rift helps interact with it better.
The Rift is a headset which is worn on the face and I had to look into it. The device has inbuilt sensors that can detect the user’s head movements and the headset display shows virtual surroundings accordingly. So if you look right while wearing the headset, the virtual surrounding change in the exact same manner showing you things on your right. The headset at the event was a Development Kit 2 which has a low persistence OLED display. The low persistence display reduces motion blur on the display when the user moves his head around. The OLED panels have a resolution of 960×1080 pixels per eye with a combined resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.
The Rift has 6DOF(Degree Of Freedom) i.e 3-axis rotational tracking + 3-axis positional tracking. Hence, the device can detect these 6 user movements easily translating in a better experience. The Oculus Rift managed to gather a lot of attention is no time.
We used the Oculus for a while and was shocked with its accuracy at showing Virtual Reality. This was my first experience with a VR headset and thanks to the low persistence display it wasn’t a dizzy experience. The experience was amazing and is expected to run with games soon. Here is a short video about our experience with the Oculus Rift.
