Remember the Blackberry issue wherein the Indian Government wanted access to the Blackberry servers, email and its messaging service? Well, it seems that the Indian Government, rather Department of Telecommunications (DOT) to be more precise along with Research in Motion have managed to come up with a solution that would allow the government to monitor the Indian Blackberry users.
As per reports, R Chandrashekhar the Telecom Secretary of India, DOT is currently is in the testing phase of a solution which would allow it to monitor several Blackberry services if not all of them. RIM had earlier granted access to India enabling them to track their messenger services, when the Indian government had threatened to ban Blackberry services in India.
Though access to other services like encrypted emails were not given by RIM stating that its not possible even for them to track the same. Hence, it remains to be seen whether the new solution that the Telecom secretary is talking about will allow the DOT to monitor RIM’s encrypted emails via the BES servers.
India is an important market for RIM, it has been seeing tremendous growth here and the status symbol that Blackberry is, even the chinese ripoffs see it as the most popular form factor. We are sure RIM would be working closely with the Indian government to comply by the law of the land, they sure have experience working in various markets across the world, including UAE where they had a tough time not too long ago.
