It’s time for Android users to rejoice, and be at par with iOS users, at least in one sense. Instagram, the popular photo-sharing app, opens a pre-release sign-up page for its new Android app. There is, however, no mention as to when the app for Google’s platform will be available for download.
The sign-up page is just a simple form, that teases the Android user base, offering them to be ‘first in line’ to get their hands on the app. Instagram fans using the Google operating platform, simply have to enter their email address to sign up, for what is speculated to be a beta version of the app, before actually releasing the app in Google-centric marketplaces.
Instagram is one of the most downloaded app on iOS devices, and has also been declared “App of the Year”, by Apple in 2011. With a strong user base of over 27 million, Instagram definitely enjoys its success on the iOS platform.
For Instagram, creating an app for Android market was the next step, as it could also help in doubling the current user base. This could also help in making Instagram, the de facto destination for uploading and sharing mobile photographs. Earlier this month, at the SXSW conference, founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger commented, “In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app”, about the soon-to-be released Android app.
What remains to be seen, is ‘how soon’ the Instagram for Android will be released, as the Sign-up page leaves you with only the following message – “Thanks for signing up! We’ll be in touch soon.”
