In a recent interview by Andy Lees, President of the Windows Phone division at Microsoft has opined that he sees the iPhone 4S as a missed opportunity by Apple. No he didn’t actually say it, he just replied in affirmative to a question posed by the interviewer.
As to why he sees this; Well according to Lees, his main bone of contention was the fact that Apple with its iOS 5 laden iPhone 4S (like all previous iPhone models) fails to give consumer more choices. People want a variety of different things from their phones and with a single model, the iPhone 4S fails to deliver that, he pointed. It is ironic that as Lee says this, there are reports coming in of the iPhone 4S preorder numbers breaking all records. Looks like, when it comes to Apple, people do not mind if they are not offered varied choices!
Lees also added that he sees the Android platform as “chaotic” while adding that the platform suffers from the problem of inconsistent experiences. He equated the things happening at the Android front with several cooks trying to bake different cakes with the same things.
As expected, he was all praise for the Windows Phone platform – especially with the arrival of the recent Mango update. He added that he sees the Windows Phone platform a much more “flowing, almost singular” one and claims that the platform is far more “people centric” than any other ones out there. This he says will enhance the experience of using the OS as they continue to add more capabilities to Windows Phone laden devices.
While sales of Windows Phone devices were unimpressive ever since its launch earlier this year, analysts expect things to go in to overdrive when Nokia launches its Windows Phone devices later this year. By 2015, research firm IDC expects Windows Phone to grab at least 20% of the smartphones market which considering its growth rate now would be a tremendous achievement. Not to mention the fact that this would happen in the wake of fierce competition from both the iOS and the Android front. Microsoft would also have adversaries like RIM and Samsung’s bada to be tackled.
