Samsung is one of the top players in the manufacturing and supplying of LED’s in the market. Samsung is not only a leading player but has also been a pioneer in the field of displays which include foldable displays and Retina Class Tablet displays.
And hence I’m not really surprised as Samsung gears up to turn your windows into LED displays. Engineers at Samsung Institute of Technology have announced that they were able to create “single crystalline Gallium Nitride on amorphous glass substrates” an accomplishment that paves the way for the creation of very large LED’s from glass, which would include your window panes as well. Isn’t that exciting?
This new technology will help reduce the cost of production of LED’s in the future as these will be made of glass substrates as opposed to the usual ones made from sapphire which is much more costlier than the glass ones. Though there exists technology to create Gallium Nitride (GaN) LEDs, there is a limitation resulting in a size limit of maximum 2 inches, whereas Samsung’s latest technology would it allow it to create LED’s that would be much larger approximately at around 400 times the current size.
Though you would be disappointed by the fact that this technology is a work in progress and it would take at least further 10 years for the technology to go mainstream and commercial productions to begin. It would be very interesting to see how buildings would look in the future with lit up window panes.
