LG has expected to launch the successor of LG G6 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in February. However, the company chose to announce the LG V30S ThinQ as an enhanced version of LG V30S smartphone that was launched in September 2017. Finally, LG has now introduced the LG G7 ThinQ as the first flagship smartphone of this year. Like it or hate it, the LG G7 ThinQ sports a notched display like the Apple iPhone X. It features an impressive LCD display and AI driven cameras.
Design and Display
The LG G7 ThinQ that measures 153.2 x 71.9 x 7.9 and weighs 162 grams sports a sleek bezel-less design. The rear side of the device is flanked with Gorilla Glass 5 panel. The handset is well-protected from dust and waterproof as it features an IP68 certified chassis. Moreover, the G7 ThinQ is MIL-STD-810G complaint device that allows it to withstand extreme weather conditions. The handset comes in multiple colors like New Platinum Gray, New Aurora Black, New Moroccan Blue and Raspberry Red.
The LG G7 ThinQ houses a FullView Super Bright LCD display that measures 6.1 inches. The notched display offers an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. It produces QHD+ resolution of 3120 x 1440 pixels and delivers up to 1000-nits of brightness. It is 30 percent more power-efficient than the OLED panel of the LG G6. People who dislike the notch can hide it by using the “New Second Screen” feature. It adds a black bar at the top which camouflages to look like a regular bezel.
Performance and Variant
The LG G7 ThinQ is fueled by the Snapdragon 845 chipset. It is packed with a 3,000mAh battery that carries support for Quick Charge 4.0 and Qi wireless charging. The handset delivers Android 8.0 out-of-the-box experience. The South Korean company has committed that it will be releasing the Android 9.0 to G7 ThinQ once Google releases its final build. The Oreo OS is skinned with LG’s AI Pack 2.0.
The LG G7 ThinQ features 4 GB of RAM and an internal storage of 64 GB. There is another version of the phone called G7+ ThinQ which features 6 GB of RAM and a native storage of 128 GB. Both variants have a dedicated slot for adding a microSD card.
Cameras, Connectivity and Other Features
The vertical dual camera setup on the derriere of the G7 ThinQ features an f/1.9 aperture 16-megapixel Super Wide Angle primary sensor that offers 107-degree field of view. The primary sensor is blessed with features like OIS, phase detection and laser autofocus. It is coupled with f/1.6 aperture 16-megapixel fixed focus lens with 71-degree field of view.
The G7 ThinQ is equipped with an f/1.9 aperture front-facing camera of 8-megapixel that offers a field of view of 90 degrees. The camera app features an AI mode that brings scene and object recognition on G7 ThinQ for shooting optimized photos. The AI camera technology along with smart pixel-binning allows the G7 ThinQ to capture impressive shots in low light conditions.
Since the front-facing camera supports facial recognition, it can be used for conveniently unlocking by scanning the face of the user. When it comes to connectivity, the G7 ThinQ offers features like 4G VoLTE with dual-SIM support and 3CA, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, NFC and GPS.
The fingerprint scanner resides under the dual camera module on the rear of the G7 ThinQ. It features a dedicated button on the left edge for launching the Google Assistant. The voice assistant will be able to listen and respond even at a distance of up to 5 meters since the G7 ThinQ is equipped with Super Far Field Voice Recognition. The handset does not feature a 3.5mm audio jack. The G7 ThinQ is equipped with Boom box stereo speakers equipped with DTS:X that allows it deliver 3D virtual audio experience with 7.1 surround sound effect. It also features 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC from ESS.
Pricing and Availability
The LG G7 ThinQ will be launching in the home market of South Korean in the next few days and it will be also coming to other regions like North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia. The South Korean company did not reveal specific launch dates for these markets. The pricing of the G7 ThinQ and ThinQ+ will be disclosed just before they are released in the market.
