LG has officially taken covers off its newest Android powered flagship handset. Called the Optimus G, this device will be the latest smartphone from the company to sport the “Optimus” tag. When released, it will undoubtedly become one of the fastest smartphones out there – at least in terms of overall specifications. This seems to be the same phone about which we had reported a few weeks ago. Back then, we had filed a story about how LG is working on a “super smartphone” to take on the Galaxy S III and the iPhone.
What you get under the hood is a 1.5 Ghz Snapdragon S 4 processor from Qualcomm doing all the number crunching. This processor also gets support from a colossal 2GB worth of RAM. The device supports 4G LTE networks and boasts of a new touchscreen technology that LG calls “in-cell touch”. While little is known about “in-cell touch”, it is rumored that this technology could also make it to Apple’s upcoming iPhone model
The phone comes with a True HD IPS+LCD display panel with a resolution of 1280*768 pixels. The display covers the entire front fascia of the phone – reminiscent of LG’s LCD TV designs. Apart from a front facing camera (we are really curious how a phone with a front facing camera can have an end to end display!) which can take snaps at 1.3 megapixels, the phone also boasts of a 13 megapixel sensor laden camera at the rear. While we all know that the megapixel war is long over, this certainly has upped the ante when it comes to high end, flagship Android smartphones and their camera resolutions.Lest, we forget, may we also add that the phone is just 8.45 mm thin while packing in a massive 2200 mAH battery?
On the software front, it will come loaded with Android 4.0 – out of the box. An official update to Jelly bean however might not be too far out in the distance.
With all this processing power packed in, it would be interesting to see how well this one stacks up against the Galaxy S III in the all important benchmarking scores. We would of course find that out very soon.
The Optimus G will first see the official light of the day in Japan where it will be lapped up by NTT DoCoMo. Soon after that, the phone will be released in South Korea, its native market followed by a phased international launch.
