Messaging application Line earlier today issued a press release claiming that the service has gone past 300 million users. Now that surely is an impressive number any way you look at it. Line, along with WeChat and WhatsApp are amongst the most used cross platform messaging app on the planet curently. Line’s press release adds that the rise from 200 million users to 300 million took them just four months. They hope to hit the 500 million mark sometime in 2014.
Line was launched in June 2011 and has since then seen massive growth. The company claims to have a strong foothold in East Asia and is growing its influence in Spain and Mexico. They are also spending lots of money for expansion in India, Turkey, France, Germany and Italy by conducting localized promotional activities and strengthening partnerships with local mobile network operators and device manufacturers. In India, they have signed up Katrina Kaif as their brand ambassador in order to entice new users. The result has been an addition of 10 million in three months since the official launch.
While all the numbers seem great, Line and WeChat – another of its competitor have a daunting job ahead of them to compete with the current leader of the pack – WhatsApp. WhatsApp in spite of having lesser features than either of these two Apps, has managed to retain its strong foothold in India and around the world. It remains to be seen if WhatsApp will be able to hold on to that position for long.
Are you using Line as your primary messaging App? Or are you another of those WhatsApp junkies who have no plans to use any other messaging app in the near future?
