Now, this is an interesting development and more importantly, great news for folks who are looking forward to the arrival of the MeeGo platform sometime next year.
The platform, which was mainly backed by Nokia and Intel, has now seen an important addition to its fold with AMD formally announcing its support for it. AMD has pledged to contribute its “engineering expertise” to the development of MeeGo.
The addition of AMD to the fold could definitely become a major coup by MeeGo before its arrival because Intel and AMD make up for more than 90% of the chip business on the planet. While both have been slow on the mobiles and handhelds front, where the likes of Qualcomm and Samsung have been dominant, the expertise of two of the worlds largest chipmakers wouls surely add to the clout of MeGo well before it arrives. Ben Bar-Haim, AMD’s software development VP, says, “This operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units.”
Now, only if the open source project manages to deliver an OS that is not only competitive – but also looks and works equally well, Nokia might just have a winner in its hands.
How optimistic are you about MeeGo reviving Nokia’s fortunes?
