Microsoft shocked a lot of people when it announced that it would be giving away a free upgrade to its latest Windows 10 for all those who were running Windows 7 as well as Windows 8. This was seen as a bold move to get all the Windows machines on the latest and greatest by Microsoft so that there could be some sort of vertical integration that could be maintained. However, if you are yet to upgrade your Windows machine to Windows 10, you would want to update now as the free upgrade is going away soon.
Starting from July 30th, the update to Windows 10 will be paid and you will have to shell out $120 in order to update. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 is already running on more than 300 million active devices. The standout feature of Windows 10, that is Cortana has already answered more than 6 billion questions, which is in all honesty not all that a lot.
This move would perhaps allow Microsoft to start planning for the future and look at the next version of Windows. With a very decent number of devices already on Windows 10, we wold expect another free upgrade so that Windows can follow the route that Apple took with their Mac OSX, where updates have largely been free for all through a year as it helps keep the ecosystem clean and troubleshoot for lesser versions.
