Software giant Microsoft has issued fresh invites for a surprise event that would be held today at Los Angeles.
Reports are flying in suggesting that Microsoft might announce a surprise product at this event. This device is nothing but a tablet that would bear the Microsoft logo. If this indeed turns out to be true, this would be widely seen as an attempt to hit back at Apple which as you might be already aware makes its own software as well as hardware – unlike Microsoft – which has had a history of designing software and licensing it to companies and OEM’s.
Microsoft however is not entirely new to making hardware as it has some experience making its own stuff. Remember the Xbox and all those Microsoft keyboards and mice? One forgettable venture is the KIN series of feature phones which was an utter failure with dismal sales figures.
Coming back to this mythical tablet, buzz is that this would run Windows RT, the tablet specific OS for ARM based devices. This would be different from Microsoft’s Windows 8 platform as well – which is expected to debut later this year. The move to come up with its own tablet might allow Microsoft to design a product that would have much better integration with its software than say what is being currently offered by OEM’s running Microsoft stuff. However, it is also pertinent t to note that Microsoft makes a big chunk of its profits from these very OEM’s who would obviously not be very happy to see Microsoft creeping in on their turf as a competitor.
Microsoft has obviously kept finer details about this event a closely guarded secret and it would only by evening that we would come to know if the mythical Microsoft tablet does make it to officialdom.
