2010 saw the advent of some really cool gadgets that not only looked good, but also sold like hot cakes. The most popular amongst these were from Apple who bought the iPhone 4 and the iPad – both of which went on to sell in staggering numbers across the globe. However, the crown for the fastest selling gadget in 2010 is not an Apple product. Ironical as it may seem, arch rival Microsoft’s Kinect sensors left behind both the Apple products in terms of sheer sales figures in the year that went by.
In fact, in two months since its launch in November 2010, it sold a staggering 10 million units – thereby earning it the title for the “fastest selling consumer device” ever. While the iPad and the iPhone may have sold larger number of units, they were launched much earlier in the year. Kinect on the other hand arrived in November 2010.
Kinect is a wireless controller for Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console. Microsoft had initially expected to sell at least 5 million Kinect units in 2010. However, to say that the sales have surpassed expectations would be an understatement. In all, in 2010 alone, it managed to sell over 8 million units. The Kinect, which retails for $149.99 is also available in two Xbox 360 bundles, which cost $299.99 or $399.99 each.
