Earlier this year, Motorola returned to the high-end smartphone territory in India with the Milestone, after a prolonged absence in which many had written off the company altogether. Now, the company seems to be consolidating its presence with the launch of two more Android phones, the Milestone XT720 and the Backflip. The XT720 seems to be more powerful of the duo, sporting a 3.7 inch touchscreen with 480 x 854 resolution, an 8.0 MP shooter with xenon flash and HD video, HDMI connectivity (there’s a cable bundled with the handset) and Android 2.1. However, it is the Backflip that seems more innovative, not just because of its reverse-flip design (which hides the QWERTY keyboard), but also because of its Backtrack feature which allows users to navigate on the 3.1 inch touchscreen without touching the screen at all. Its specs are relatively modest – a 5.0 MP camera with LED flash and rather shocking, a REALLY dated version of Android (1.5). However, its innovative design saw it walk away with the 2010 CNET Best of CES award in the Cell phones and Smartphones category earlier this year. The specs of both phones are up on the Motorola India site, and the price tags are a MRP (Maximum Retail Price) of Rs. 34,990 (recommended retail price Rs. 27,490) for the Milestone XT720, and a MRP of Rs. 22,990 (Recommended Retail Price5: Rs. 19,490) for the Backflip. Honestly, we would have made the Backflip the Android device of the year had it been running Froyo. In its current state, it is totally overshadowed by the XT720, which should be slugging it out with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 for the title of best Android camera phone.
