Usually trustworthy folks from over at Engadget are reporting about the possibility of Google’s (and Samsung’s) previous generation “Nexus” class device – the Nexus S receiving a much needed upgrade to Android 4.0 (IceCream Sandwich) in the next few weeks. While Engadget hasn’t revealed who their source is, they seem to be quite confident of the news this little birdie has told them.
Incidentally, an official update was issued for the Nexus S back in December which was almost immediately pulled because of many bugs that it came with. Still, many users were able to update to ICS back then. But a major chunk of Nexus S users are still hanging on to the stock Android 2.3 version while some others have moved on to custom ROMs.
The Nexus class of devices is usually the first ones to receive official updates from Google. In this case though, looks like Google and Samsung (the manufacturer of the Nexus S) both seem to have ignored old users and concentrated on the latest Nexus device – the Android 4.0 laden Galaxy Nexus which was announced back in October 2011.
The migration of Android devices from Gingerbread to IceCream Sandwich is proving to be a major hurdle for most manufacturers as made evident by the long delays they are encountering to deploy them. It was only recently that Samsung officially released Android 4.0 for its flagship handset the Galaxy S II – that too in select countries. Most users however were unhappy with the updated Android 4.0 version for the Galaxy S II that has been just released thanks to Samsung’s haphazard customization with its Touchwiz UI.
Anyway, let us all hope that disgruntled Nexus S users would get something to cheer about in the form of an ICS update in the weeks to come.
