If you have been following the Windows Phone saga closely, you might be aware that for reasons best known to Microsoft, the company had decided to stop support for FM Radio with Windows Phone 8 – a thing which was supported in Windows Phone 7. However, of late Nokia Microsoft’s biggest Window Phone vendor has launched a bunch of products aimed at the mid-range markets where there is a sizable demand for the addition of FM radio as a feature.
Nokia’s Lumia 520 is one such handset. In India, being priced under the Rs. 10,000 mark, there is considerable interest in the handset. Many people – chiefly youngsters have asked me if the phone does support FM Radio to which I had to say an emphatic “No” as an answer- even though I knew that the phone has FM Radio hardware in it. The lack of FM radio as a feature could have resulted in Nokia being unable to convert a general “interest” towards the phone into sales. Nokia however is all set to fix this.
Fresh reports seem to point towards the possibility of the Lumia 520 getting the sought after support for FM Radio. The impending GDR2 update for Windows phone is rumored to enable the feature on devices that presently have FM Radio hardware. This of course includes the Lumia 520 which was just recently launched in India and has already generated a lot of buzz.
The possibility of activating the FM Radio on the Lumia 920 was further confirmed by Nokia’s own Chat Care during an online chat session. When a customer asked about the same, the answer was that a new software update would enable FM Radio on the Lumia 520. As of now it is unclear whether this update would enable FM functionality on other Lumia devices.
