Qualcomm is currently the chip supplier for windows phones but according to the sources ST-Ericsson is also going to supply chips in at least some of the upcoming windows phones. Microsoft has gone lengths to ensure that all WP7 handsets have a consistent spec thus making it easier for them to manage updates and performance. As the platform grows, we can surely expect a lot of variation.

If the reports are true Dual-core ST-Ericsson U8500 is the first on chip system that will appear on Nokia’s Windows Phones in 2012. This chip might also be seen in new Samsung Infuse 4G Smartphone and the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G. Developers would surely love to test the performance of these chips and deliver breakthrough results. Nokia, we are waiting!

The ST-Ericsson chipmaker reported a 33% drop in first quarter and a net loss $179 million. This means that ST-Ericsson is struggling financially and a deal with Nokia will give them a boost. To increase its share ST-Ericsson is also investing $1 billion in research and development for 4G/LTE chips.
