We all know that guarding a prison is not only a risky job but also can be taxing at times. And what better than to have someone who can monitor and control the prison situation 24×7 tirelessly without blinking their eyes even once.
Now this one might seem to be straight out of a science fiction movie but this robot you see here is designed patrol the corridors of corrective institutions. Though this is still just a project in its nascent stage financed by the Ministry of Justice (not the Harry Potter one though) in South Korea.
The robots will be deployed as guards to monitor the corridors at a prison in the city of Pohang, south east of Seoul starting from March. Apparently the project is going to cost around 1 billion won or $863,000.
Prof. Lee Baik-chul of Kyonggi University, who is also in charge of the project, said that the robots will only report any unusual or sudden activity back to the human guards. He also said that the robots cannot harm the prisoners in any way.
The robots will not only help reduce the workload of the prison guards but also be able to interact with the inmates helping them to communicate with the prison guards in case of emergencies.
Prof. Lee also stated that they are working on trying to change the appearance of these robots and make them look more human and friendly.
