OnePlus One owners can now expect the latest version of Android Lollipop on their handsets by March 30. OnePlus has had some arguments with Cyanogen in the past regard the use of its Cyanogen OS in India after Cyanogen had got into an exclusive agreement with Micromax to provide software for its Yu Yureka series of phones. As a result, OnePlus got its own developers team ready and the new OS is called the Oxygen OS which is based on Android.
OnePlus has now confirmed the release date for its Android Lollipop update – it’s coming in March. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei broke the news via Twitter, after receiving a ton of requests from users for more information on the update. The company later went on to release the ‘alpha’ build of the Lollipop update on its blog. The final Over- The- Air (OTA) update will introduce some performance improvements and bug fixes. The company had earlier promised to deliever the Lollipop upgrade by February but was held back by certain performance issues. Now, OnePlus is so confident, that it has promised to give away 5 OnePlus One smartphones if it fails to deliever the OTA upgrade before April.
OnePlus users will get the Cyanogen Mod 12S OTA upgrade this month which should bring relief to thousands of users who thought that OnePlus will not be releasing the Cyanogen Mod Build in India. However, users will also have the option to install Oxygen OS by flashing their phones. It is still not clear if the OnePlus One phones sold after April will have the Oxygen OS as the default operating system.
Earlier Cyanogen had left Indian OnePlus One users high and dry by stating that Indian OnePlus One owners will not be eligible for OTA upgrade of Cynaogen Mod Builds. It appears that the the three companies- OnePlus, Micromax and Cyanogen Mod have gone for a out of court settlement. However, to avoid scenarios like this in the future, OnePlus is focussed on building its own custom Oxygen OS.
