The mobile telephony patent war saga took a far eastern turn earlier today when Sony announced that it would be suing LG for infringing on as many as seven of its valuable patents. The suits have been filed at the U.S. International Trade Commission (U.S. ITC). Sony claims that a bunch of devices made by LG including a couple of LG Modems and new handsets including the LG VL600, the Fathom, and the Xenon use technologies that infringe upon a few of its patents.
The type of patents range from ones that relate to a photo-based caller ID to ones that relate to transmitting and encoding audio based on the kind of bandwidth available. Sony has also added that companies like Nokia, Samsung and Sony’s partner Sony Ericsson have all licensed these technologies from Sony.
It would be interesting to see how LG responds to this move from Sony. In the past we have seen companies sued by a competitor getting back at them by coming up with a counter suit.
