PayPal has launched an official application for Symbian handsets. Based on Java, the app lets you do almost everything you would expect from a PayPal application including send and receive money, check recent transactions and setting a mobile PIN. The app which went live yesterday seems to be available in only a few countries as of now. It is supported on most Symbian^1 handsets and all Symbian^3 handsets.
Strange as it may seem, instead of being a “Symbian” app, the app is written in Java. This does add a few quirks when it comes to the overall usage. We would have ideally liked to see a native symbian app rather than one based on Java, to be honest. Let’s hope PayPal addresses this concern in the next iteration of the app update process.
As of now the phones that find mention in the officially supported list include the Nokia N97, N97 mini, 5230 , 5800, C6-00, X6 and the Nokia N8-00, The countries where the app would work include USA, UK, France and Canada. Note that this is not a comprehensive list. There are many other countries where this would work – these are just the user confirmed ones.
The C7-00, C6-01 and E7-00 are currently not listed as being compatible with the PayPal application.
