With tech industry buzzing hot with smartphones and wearable devices, Ray Enterprises have thought upon a completely new yet useful device. This gadget is meant to solve all the clutter of remotes to control gadgets around you. The concept of one single universal remote for all isn’t novel. But a remote worthy of the 21st century design and features was yet to be surfaced. Looking at all these requirements, Ray’s Super Remote seems to be a valid creation.
On first impression, this Super Remote gives a feel of any regular touchscreen smartphone. But it isn’t. This touchscreen remote is designed to control all kinds of gadgets around you, be it TV’s, DVR players, cable boxes, video game consoles, etc. Moreover, the company claims that this remote is made to be compatible with about 1,200 brands and 20,000 devices.
Reading at the technical specifications gives a design of a slightly outdated smartphone itself. It has a 4.8-inch capacitive touchscreen which is fingerprint and scratch resistant oleophobic coating. The screen offers a resolution of 1120*480 pixels. It holds dual-core CPU running at 1GHz. The processor is coupled with ARM Cortex-A9 GPU for graphics and a 1GB RAM space. Memory capacity reads out to be 8GB. Super Remote is powered by a non-removable 2550mAh Li-Ion battery.
Looking at more important specifications related to the controlling parameters, the most prominent feature is 180 degree signal transmission with a 33 ft range. It has overall seven transmitting LED’s. The hardware is designed to learn different IR codes on operation. Connectivity features include WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and most importantly Zigbee control. Enabling it with Zigbee communication will ensure that this remote will also be suitable with home automation appliances.
The GUI includes built-in apps for TV, DVR, On demand movies and videos, Sports, Apple TV, XBox, Roku, etc. Users can instantaneously switch between the controls, which is not possible with many of the latest applications on your smartphones built to control such devices. Super Remote also learns about the preferred channels, movie genres, videos, etc. and offers a recommendation list accordingly. In partnership with Dish Network, Ray Enterprises also have announced integration of the Ray Super Remote with Dish’s Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR.
Ray’s Super Remote is set to ship by spring. After spending about three years in developing this device, it seems that Super Remote’s versatility and intelligence will make it stand out from rest of similar devices in the market. But the biggest question users might face is if they are willing to spend $199 (about INR 12,500) just for sorting the mess of the remotes.
