The Seven Deadly Sins of the Nokia E7

Seven Deadly Sins

Having used the Nokia E7 for more than a week now, I find myself more and more in agreement with Nokia’s decision to go for a tie-up with Microsoft. Because far from being on par with previous Communicator series devices, the E7 comes up short in not just one but as many as seven departments. Yes, the fanboys will shout and scream that all is well with the Finnish company, but my take is that the E7 is perhaps the weakest device in terms of value for money to come from the E series. Not convinced? Then go right ahead and read the seven deadly sins that are dragging down the E7:

The display:

Yes, AMOLED and scratch proof is all very nice and so is the four inch size. But the resolution of 640×360 is pathetic in this era.

The QWERTY:

I still do not know why Nokia persists in making slide out keyboards that need to be pushed hard to slide out and then slide out with a “thunk” sound. The QWERTY seen in the Motorola Milestone and even HTC Desire Z slide out much more smoothly, and much less noisily.

The camera:

An 8 MP camera without autofocus. Nokia says no autofocus because this is a business phone. But if that is the logic then were not the E72 and E90 business phones too? They had autofocus. This camera is an insult to smartphones – easily the WORST in this price segment.

Widgets still do not work:

This is something that Nokia has picked up from the N8 – lots of widgets, most of which do not work. Net result is that you have to keep refreshing them physically. Why not just go for Android?

Processor:

The world is talking of dual core processors that are more than 1GHz in speed. The E7 comes with a single core 680 MHz processor. Honestly, I did not find any problems in terms of speed with its working, but I really wonder how much faster it would have worked if it had a processor like the iPhone 4!

The Interface and OS:

Symbian ^3 is not a patch on iOS, Android, WP7 and Web OS in terms of speed and ease of use. Why does Nokia persist in placing skins over the old Symbian – its like changing the colour of a house and then pretending that the house is a new one? Where are the apps and speed that make the other OS special?

Price:

It is priced in the same range as high end Android and Windows Phone devices and close to the iPhone, in spite of having an inferior processor, display, interface and fewer applications… is this what you call Value for Money, Nokia?

  • You are not fair. Stop critisize NOKIA!!! by reading this, It is not difficult to figure out that you are against nokia
Everybody knows that “symbian” is old but its works very well. The keyboard is the best keyboard ever seen on a smartphone and it’s open very easily.
The 8 MP camera is better than a lot of other smartphone’s camera, even if we can regret the Auto Focus.
I don’t like people who say something just to make the consumers believe that a device is not good. Change your mind!!!
The Nokia E7 is not perfect, but its keyboard is, and “symbian 3” is totally stable, making the device very responsive

    • I am not sure about the camera, but having used the keyboard, I can tell you that the top row is hard to press when typing fast as the distance between the keyboard and the diaplay is too less. You keep rubbing your fingers against the screen (upper part of the handset) instead of cleanly typing on the keys.

Having said that, we certainly aren’t against Nokia. We still love the E series and a well know fact that our podcasts are actually recorded on a conference call, thats on a Nokia E63.

      • You said you’re not against Nokia, but i think you should read your preview one more time, and give me one “hits” to the E7.

To resume your point of view:

        – the display: AMOLED is good, but the resolution is pathetic.
(according to a lot of person, CBD AMOLED is one of the best display in these days, even if the resolution is not high, why did you not say that?)

        – the QWERTY keyboard: Nokia should stop making slide out keyboards that need to be pushed hard to slide out and then slide out with a “thunk” sound.
(according to a lot of person, The Nokia slide out keyboard is near to the perfection…so what’s wrong?)

        – the camera: This camera is an insult to smartphones – easily the WORST in this price segment.
(i can’t deny one point: they should put an AF camera. But that’s not the “WORST” camera in this price segment. you can take beautiful photos and videos with it. Tell this)

        – Widgets still do not work: Why not just go for Android?
        (are you serious? lol)

        – Processor: the only point where i agree with you (no need to have a 1Ghz in speed if the E7 with 680 Mhz works well and can stay powered 2 days in a row)

-The Interface and OS: Why does Nokia persist in placing skins over the old Symbian
(a lot of person are agree with that, but you should say that Symbian 3 is perfectly stable, operational and functional , why do you omit this part?)

  • i really dont see any wrong with this phone except for the price which is 2 am using much n97mini and feel like changing but price tag wow

  • Mr. Spock is clearly a Nokia hater.

I agree only 2 points from you. Fixed-focus camera and the price tag. All the rest makes you sound like a frustrated Nokia fanboy.

Display – It’s CBD AMOLED, clearly you don’t even know that one. I won’t complain about the resolution if I will not see pixellated images. Did you?

QWERTY – It’s one of the best keyboards out there. You complained about the thunk sound and compared it with milestone and desire z yet you never mentioned it tilts to an angle unlike those two.

Widgets – I presume you have tested an actual E7 in your hands but don’t know how to use widgets.

Processor – How could you compare clock speeds between platforms? Don’t you think its important to know first how each platforms work?

Interface/os – not flashy flashy like ios or android but gets the job done.

I have SGS and ip4 and having explored E7 from a friend, I think I might get E7.
