The Sunday Times of Britain has reported that RIM is considering splitting its business into two, separating the handset manufacturing business from its messaging services.
There were rumors earlier indicating that RIM might be willing to make their BBM service available on other platforms. RIM has hired RBC Capital and JP Morgan last month to understand its strategic options. As per the British newspaper, RIM could even end up selling its handset business.
Amazon and Facebook are listed as the potential buyers in the report. While the messaging service could be sold or made available to rivals such as Apple and Google.
RIM might also consider the option of keeping its divisions intact and selling off a major stake to a larger tech firm like Microsoft which has recently shown interest in enetering the hardware business.
RIM has been struggling to stay afloat off late with its shares taking a record plunge in recent years.
