Trolling Nokia seems to be Samsung’s favorite past time these days. While the world was patiently awaiting the announcement of first of the Windows Phone 8 based smartphones from Nokia on September 5, Samsung has gone ahead and used the IFA as a platfrom to launch a bunch of Windows 8 based products – including a Windows Phone 8 based phone.
With Microsoft’s special relationship with Nokia known to us all, this seems to be a deliberate dig at both Microsoft and Nokia by the South Korean Electronics giant. While there were a bunch of other Windows 8 based devices announced, we would be taking a closer look at the Ativ S – which happens to be the name of the first ever Windows Phone 8 laden device to be announced.
The Ativ S is a slim handset which measures just 8.7mm across. The display on this thing measures 4.8 inches across and has a resolution of 1280*720 pixels. The display type is Super AMOLED – a common sight on most high end Samsung handsets. Under the hood, powering the device is a dual core processor with a clock speed of 1.5 Ghz. At this point we are unsure about the make of the chip -but we are assuming it is a Qualcomm chip inside. The phone also gets 1 GB of RAM.
The Ativ S comes in two varieties – a 32 GB version and a 16 GB version. The best part? You can expand the memory further using Micro SD cards – an option which was hitherto unavailable on Windows Phone devices. Connectivity options are comprehensive on the Ativ S with support for Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth.
While Samsung might have beat Nokia to announce the world’s first Windows Phone 8 powered device, there has been no word from them regarding the possible launch date for this one. There is also no word about the pricing.
Things would certainly get interesting once Nokia too announces its Windows Phone based devices on September 5.
