Apart from the launch of the third generation Galaxy Note, the other most important launch at yesterdays “Unpacked” event was the launch of Samsung’s much rumored and recently leaked smart watch. Called the Galaxy Gear, the mythical product has evoked mixed reactions hours after its official announcement. Let’s see what the specifications on the device are.
To start with, it features a Super AMOLED display that measures 1.63 inces across. It has a resolution of 320*320 pixels and is powered by a processor clocked at 800 Mhz. There is 4 GB of non expandable memory and 512 MB worth of RAM which should be enough to run your twiddly smartwatch apps. There is a 1.9 megapixel camera too – the intention of which is to capture ‘snapshots’ according to Samsung. There is a 315 mAH battery powering the entire unit which weighs lesser than 80 grams.
On the software front, the device runs Samsung’s own custom OS and not Android as previously suspected. That said, Samsung has managed to evoke decent developer interest in the platform and already boasts of over 70 odd applications as of typing this – including popular ones like Evernote, Line, eBay, MyFitnessPal, and RunKeeper.
The Galaxy Gear is intended to be used as an extension of your smartphone and is fully equipped to do all your basic tasks – reminding you about meetings, helping you receive and make calls and of course, telling you the time without having to take your phone out of your pocket. Currently only the just launched Galaxy Note 3 finds itself in the supported list – although Samsung says that most of its high end line up would be updated soon to be compatible with the Galaxy Gear.
Samsung will be selling the Galaxy Gear in 140 countries around the globe by the end of this month and has priced it at around the $300 mark. There is no word of an India specific availability as of now.
