Seagate has confirmed that they are working on a 3 TB hard drive which would be out by the end of this year. Not a lot is known yet, but it is confirmed that the Constellation disk would require a 64-bit operating system as it supports long logical block addressing to read all the stored content. It looks like older 32-bit platforms may only have a maximum storage capacity of 2.1 TB due to their different LBA. However, new development for 32-bit platforms may make it possible.
Computers will at the least need to support the United EFI Forums firmware and only then it will be possible to boot these new 3 TB drives. Various new drivers would be required to support all the common configurations which depend on external hardware. At the moment no support for the Mac OS X is confirmed, but it is sure that 64-bit builds of Win 7 and Vista along with a few versions of Linux will support this technology.
There is a remarkably strong possibility that 2011 will show us much powerful hard drives as companies will now try to push the limit much further. There are no pricing details yet available, but I am extremely sure it is going to cost a bomb.
