Just days after we talked about the prospects of a PSP phone, Sony has announced on its PlayStation Blog that it will soon be releasing an official PlayStation app for the Android and iOS platforms. Now, before you get your hopes up too high, we would like to point out that the first version of the app, as per the details on the blog, will not let you play or even buy games on your handset, but is more of an information delivery vehicle.
Gamers will be able to check out their PlayStation Network trophies and keep track of their friends’ games and online status; get news about PS3, PS2 and PSP games and hardware and tune into announcements on the official blog; as well as share news with their friends over Twitter and Facebook. What’s more, the app (when it is released) will be initially available only for users in UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands.
Of course, these are extremely early days, and we have been assured “tons more features” are being planned for the app in the coming days, including availability for other countries. Right now, we are hoping that at some stage the app will let gamers purchase and play some version of PS games (heck, we loved some of the classics on that platform) and will also serve as a precursor for a full-fledged PSP game store for the rumoured PSP phone. We will know when the app finally goes live in the coming days – it will work on most Android 1.6 handsets and on iPhone and iPod Touch with iOS 4 and above and will be a free download.
And no, there was NO mention whatsoever of an app for Symbian or Windows Phone/ Windows Mobile, which means that the app will not be available for a number of Sony Ericsson smartphones running on those platforms. Makes you wonder…
