Sony Ericsson seems to be on a roll these days. After a plethora of launches of late, the company is in action yet again and has today launched three new Android powered handsets. The new kids on the block are the Xperia Ray, Xperia Active and the Sony Ericsson Txt. We will take a closer look at the Active and the Ray in this post.
We start with the Xperia Ray. This phone is the most significant launch of the day. Targeted as a mid-range Android smartphone, the device boasts of a 3.3 inch display with a resolution of 854*480 pixels. Such a high resolution on a screen that size should offer excellent readability we believe. Like the Xperia Arc, the device is extremely thin and measures just 9.4mm across. The phone weighs in at just 100 grams which makes it quite light. The phone gets a 1Ghz processor which should make the device a zippy performer.
Also incorporated inside this tiny shell is a full-fledged 8.1 megapixel camera, complete with Sony’s proprietary Exmor R backside illuminated sensor technology. The phone can record and playback videos in 720p as well. On the Software front, once again, Sony Ericsson wants us to forget its past and offers us with the latest Android version (Gingerbread) which I should say, is much appreciated. Connectivity options include all the standard stuff plus DLNA certification, aGPS and a much needed 3.5mm audio jack.
The phone gets 300 MB of onboard memory. This can be of course, expanded up to 32 GB using compatible micro SD cards. The battery is rated at 1500 mAH . Expect this one to be in stores in Q3, this year. The company is yet to disclose the price of this phone.
Next up, we have the Xperia Active. This handset, like the name suggests is designed for an active fitness freak and boasts of features that would appeal to one. For example, the device is dust proof and water resistant. Another interesting feature is something known as wet finger tracking. This eliminates the annoying issue of non responsiveness of the display to wet fingers.
The spec sheet looks decent too. This one has a 3 inch display and gets a 5 megapixel camera. The phone also gets a 1Ghz processor. It can record videos in HD too. Not bad for a phone of its segment. The screen resolution is scaled down from that of the Ray and measures at just 320*480 pixels. The phone packs in 320MB of internal memory and supports micro SD cards of up to 32 GB. It comes with a 2GB card.
Like the Ray, this phone also runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The phone also comes preloaded with lots of apps- almost all of them targeted at the fitness freaks. Sony Ericsson foresees a Q3 launch for this device as well.
