Operators in Japan are known for releasing weird looking phones that usually don’t work anywhere else on the planet. Other things Japanese phones are famous for being their specs. While we in the rest of the planet do have some devices with powerful specs, the Japanese might have probably used a phone with similar specs – two years back. Now that we are on about Japanese phones, let me divert your attention to the latest Sony Ericsson camera phone to arrive on the KDDI network there.
We are talking about the Sony Ericsson Cybershot S006 camera phone which can capture images at 16 mega pixels! The release of this handset comes just a year after Sony Ericsson first displayed its 16 mega pixel chips to us mere mortals. The phone features comprehensive camera options – as you would expect from a cybershot device. What you might miss though is an optical zoom feature that would have been accomplished on a phone of this kind. Sony Ericsson seems to have chosen sleekness over functionality and decided to give that feature a miss. But then, we ain’t complaining! At 16 mega pixels, this one can make the likes of the Nokia N8 and the Satio cringe. Thankfully, this one isn’t direct competition to them – at least for now.
Since a camera phone is also a phone, its only correct that we should shed some light on other features of this pint sized wonder. The S006 gets a 3.3 inch (touch screen?) display and apart from the usual stuff like a 1GHZ Snapdragon CPU, Wi-Fi, FM Tuner Radio, GPS and Bluetooth.
Now for the sad part. No, it’s not about this phone being available only in Japan. Don’t you want to know what operating system it uses? No, it’s not android. No. Not Symbian either. For reasons best known to Sony Ericsson, they put in their own proprietary OS inside this one. It is still beyond me why they did that.
this 16 mp shooter to arrive on a GSM platform in the next few months? And may we ask for some optical zoom as well please 🙂 With Android of course.
