Sony Ericsson has issued a statement which says that its supply chain has been affected by the earthquake in Japan last week. Japan is reeling under a nuclear crisis after the largest earthquake to hit the country event in recorded history. Sony Ericsson has confirmed that all its 1100 personell in the country are safe. However, with a major chunk of its Japanese operations dependent on suppliers based in the northern part of the country, the extensive damage caused in that region is almost certainly going to affect Sony Ericsson’s business, the company says.
This couldn’t have come at a worse time for Sony Ericsson which had announced a plethora of new Android powered handsets in an attempt to gain lost ground in the worldwide mobilephone market share. The company has been continuously in the red for the past quarters with a slight inkling of recovery of late.
It now remains to be seen how bad the impact of the earthquake turns out to be.
