Another reason to smile for all those disgruntled Xperia X10 users to smile. These people, who were first left with a phone that couldn’t multi touch and were then stuck with an ancient version of Android with no signs of an update arriving for months, seems to have come out of both these problems. First, Sony Ericsson released a much delayed Android 2.1 update for the phones earlier this month and then announced that the X10 would be getting another update that would enable multi touch on the device!
Now, this is an interesting development because Sony Ericsson had on earlier occasions said that the phone’s hardware was simply not designed for multi touch. This was when the dev community tried to do things to enable the feature. Months later, we now have confirmation that the hardware does support multi touch after all – albeit in a “limited” way.
Now, things are all not looking rosy because the update would only enabled for the browser and maps applications. The picture gallery hasn’t been included it seems. Third-party apps would also be able to make use of the new found pinch and zoom abilities that the phone gets. In a video preview of how things would appear on the Xperia with pinch and zoom, the phone is shown running Angry Birds. Here’s the link to the video
