Sony has announced the launch of its recently announced Android powered handset, the Xperia S in India. The phone has become the first handset to be launched in India after Sony Mobile Communications split from Ericsson and became a fully owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation.
The Xperia S is currently the flagship device from Sony. It was announced at the Mobile World Congress back in February. The Xperia S powered by a Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon chip which incorporates a Dual-core CPU running at 1.5 GHz. The graphics bit is handled by an Adreno 220 GPU
The phone gets a large 4.3 inch TFT display with a resolution of 720*1280 pixels. The highlight of the phone is perhaps its 12 megapixel camera which also doubles up as a HD video recorder capable of taking 1080p quality videos. There is a secondary camera too at the front which can take pictures at 1.3 megapixels and can also take videos at 720p.
Perhaps, the most disappointing aspect of the phone is the fact that it is launching with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. However, Sony is promising an ICS update soon. However, considering the fact that the likes of the HTC One X and the One V are already launching with Android 4.0, this might be a regressive step from Sony.
The phone gets 32GB of Internal memory which cannot be expanded further. The Xperia S has been launched at an introductory price of 32,549
Along with the Xperia S Sony also announced the launch of two other devices – all of which were announced recently. These include the Xperia P and the Xperia U. The prices of these phones have however been not announced yet.
