Sony has just pulled the wraps off of two new mid-end Xperia smartphones, the SP and the L. though not exactly the best designed handsets on the market, with their specs coupled with a nice price point, we have a feeling they could move quite a few units.
Xperia SP:
- 4.6″ 720p Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine 2
- Dual Core 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960T chipset
- 1 GB of RAM
- 8GB internal storage with 5.8GB accessible by users and MicroSD card support
- Android 4.1
- 2730 mAH battery (now we’re talking, Sony!)
- 8 MP primary camera with Exmor RS and a VGA front facing camera
- WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0
The Xperia SP looks quite impressive on paper. Apart from the somewhat dated version of Android, it matches most flagship phones from last year and that healthy dollop of battery is quite tempting. It also has a transparent glowing element somewhat similar to the Xperia U. The Xperia L’s design does seem somewhat uninspiring in pictures though, but again, if its priced well it would be a great deal indeed.
Xperia L:
- 4.3″ FWVGA (854×480) display
- Dual Core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8230 chipset
- 1 GB of RAM
- 8GB internal storage with 5.8GB accessible by users and MicroSD card support
- Android 4.1
- 1750 mAH battery
- 8 MP primary camera with Exmor RS and a VGA front facing camera
- WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0
In essence, the Xperia L can be considered a successor to last year’s Xperia U. It is somewhat decidedly low end, with a much inferior processor only capable of 720p video. Again, if its priced well it is sure to sell a lot, even with a somewhat pixel-sparse display.
Both phones should be available by June in Asia and Europe, though Sony has yet to give out any information regarding the price point. Also, both of them are available in white, black and red variants.
