A good 13 years after it was first introduced – and over 150 million units later, Sony has finally decided to stop selling the PlayStation 2 Gaming Console in its home market – Japan. The PS2 was succeeded by the PS3 which continues to sell in large numbers. For lovers of this legacy gaming console, this surely marks the end of an era. While the PS2 will continue to be sold in countries other than Japan, it is clear that age has finally caught up with the veteran and its days are numbered even in the other markets. Japanese PS2 lovers on the other hand have their last chance to get hold of the device after which it would permanently go off shelves.
Thanks to its backward compatibility with the PS1, people were immediately attracted towards it – add to it the fact that Sony had managed to get a bunch of exclusive titles on to the platform. Another reason the PS2 was immediately lapped up by users was the fact that over 2000 plus titles were compatible with the PS2 at launch.
The PS2 was also launched with full support for DVD – which also led to many users dump their VHS players in favor of the (then) new kid on the block.
Those of you still interested in getting hold of one, the PS2 is still available here in India for decent prices. Unfortunately, if we are to go anything by the intention of Sony, it might soon be off shelves here as well.
