Mozilla’s Firefox OS will finally see the light of the day in India. Today, Spice has announced India’s first Firefox OS running smartphone, vaguely named ‘Fire One Mi – FX 1’. It will be available exclusively on snapdeal.com for now at a super-affordable cost of Rs. 2,299 and on August 29th it’ll be officially launched and made available in other retail outlets.
As expected at such a low price, the device sports a 3.5-inch HVGA display. While it won’t support 3G connectivity, thankfully dual-SIM feature is present alongside Wi-Fi, EDGE and Bluetooth. It’s powered by a 1GHz single core processor which as Mozilla says is the bare minimum requirement to run the OS. The camera is 2MP on the rear and a 1.3MP on the front.
Mozilla’s Firefox OS only runs Web-based apps, written in HTML5 and JavaScript. In comparison, Mozilla will have to compete with the current breed of affordable Android phones which offer good performance, decent cameras and an excellent app ecosystem with native apps and games.
The Fire One Mi – FX 1 will support several Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil and Bangla. It comes with special software features like Adaptive App Search which allows a user to discover apps based on what they search for and even some apps can make use of location info to customize the content they display. The phone also comes preloaded with apps like Facebook, Twitter and Connect A2.
Apart from India, Firefox OS running phones are now available in 17 countries across Europe, Asia and Latin America. If you’re planning on buying the Spice Fire One, then let me inform you that Intex is also set to launch its first Firefox OS powered smartphone, called Cloud FX, on August 25. We’re anxious to find out if users will adopt to the whole Firefox ecosystem and are comfortable buying this instead of a typical candy-bar Nokia handset.
