Stanford Faculty and Staff Homes get Google Fibre i.e. 1Gbps speeds!

We had reported sometime earlier about a crazy Google initiative to test out 1Gbps connectivity. Google Fibre is officially set to hit a target audience of 50000 – 500000 (for its experiment) after Google actually zeros down on the location, but they seem to have found a worthy place to “beta” test this thing for now. As announced, Google is wiring 850 faculties and staff homes in Standford University to give them the 1Gbps love.

We’ve reached an agreement with Stanford University to build an ultra-high speed broadband network to the university’s Residential Subdivision, a group of approximately 850 faculty- and staff-owned homes on campus. Through this trial, we plan to offer Internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second—more than 100 times faster than what most people have access to today. We plan to start breaking ground in early 2011.

Google said that they have done some initial testing at their end and that leaves us excited wondering about the future of the internet. Given that the company is also gearing up to release the Chrome OS which incidentally is a web browser extended to a OS, I can smell what is cooking at Cupertino. Any ideas on what a 1Gbps means for developers? The Internet?

  • i think Annkur its high-time to test 1gbps internet speed since the whole IT world seems to be moving towards Cloud Computing as a result of which (1)demand for very high speed internet will increase (2) role of traditional web browser will enhance to a completely new more prominent & central level….infact to the extent that as google thinks it could even deployed as a full-fledge OS e.g. Chromium os !(3)finally more & more web-bassed apps will start replacing stand-alone apps.
Keeping above points in mind its no wonder why google is testing 1gbps speed, developing Chromium OS,launching Chrome Web Store…..as usual google wants to be at forefront of the future of IT……
Besides, Annkur i also feel pity for our country which still struggles to launch 3G leave alone 4G etc…..
