The recently launched T-Mobile G2, the successor to the original G1 comes with one major gripe. It packed in a very underpowered (when compared to the current crop of mobile processors) CPU that runs at “just” 800Mhz. At that speed, it didn’t certainly set any benchmarking records or came anywhere close to breaking one. That said, there is still one record that it could possibly break – the title of being the most “overclockable” mobile CPU currently available!
That’s right. Folks over at XDA Developers have managed to over clock the MSM7230 core in the processor has to almost double the original clock speed to a mind numbing 1.9 GHz. This behavior is quite unlike the Snapdragon QSD8250 core in the Snapdragon which cannot be overclocked more than 15% over its original clock speed without adverse effects. The G2 CPU however for some reason manages to stay stable even at 1.9 GHz.
The kernel that enables this speed bump has been posted at XDA Developers and can be installed on your rooted G2. Note that if you decide to tread this path, you should be sure of what you’re doing or risk having to end up with a fried T-Mobile G2 paperweight.

Well to be fair, Motorola CEO has promised 2GHz on phones before year end. For now only this shows up 🙂
