Well this rolling ball is just not any ball but a revolutionary camera equipped surveillance bot for the future. Though it reminds me of those rolling creatures in the sci-fi movie Critters. This one is called the GroundBot made by a Swedish firm named Rotundus.
It is a multi-terrain, remote controlled all weather 2 foot bot that can be used for surveillance and can be easily used in difficult to monitor places such as ones filled with snow, mud or even going uphill. The GroundBot has two sets of cameras one on each side. It helps monitor remotely by sending across feeds in 3D to the monitoring team.
Unlike other remote surveillance devices which are usually obese or weigh a ton. The GroundBot just weighs a mere 25kg and can even float on liquid surfaces due to its low weight and low density.
The remote controlled GroundBot comes with knobby treads for all terrain or without them for smoother locations. It can travel up to a maximum speed of 6 mph and more importantly it does not make any sound, though the speed of the bot is bound to improve with further testing and developments.
It is currently being tested by the Swedish Defense Forces to monitor important areas like the airport and ports, which are generally difficult to monitor at times of high activity. There are definitely a lot of other situations and locations where the Rotundus GroundBot can be put to immediate use. One being the earthquake affected radioactive Fukushima Power Plant in Japan and the other one being planet Mars! I hope guys at NASA are reading this… 🙂
