We have been hearing rumours about its existence for weeks and even expressed our cynicism about it, but we – and the world – got official confirmation of the existence of a PlayStation phone. And it could not have come more dramatically – in a Super Bowl ad which showed a human finger being added to an Android figure, with the words then appearing “Android is Ready to Play,” followed by a sombre voice declaring “The smartphone with everything you need and the one thing you want.” The device is called the Xperia Play as had been rumoured and although we have no details of official specs of the device as yet but it does seem to conform to the large touchscreen with PSP type controls sliding out horizontally from it.
A counter has also sprung up on the Sony Ericsson Facebook page with the release date of the Play being shown as February 13, 2011 at 1800 hours GMT, as well as the Super Bowl ad. Clearly Sony Ericsson is betting heavily on adding a gaming dimension to Android to make the Xperia Play click. And we are rooting for them out here. More details when we get them.
