In the latest report regarding the state of the smartphones market in the UK by research firm ComScore, a staggering thing that has come to light is the phenomenal growth Of the Android operating system in that country.
While it was already revealed that Symbian, the once dominant smartphone OS in the UK had quickly ran out of steam losing market share dramatically, what is now clear is that all these Symbian abandoners ended up switching to Android.
Thanks to Android and iOS, the overall usage of smartphones in the UK too has soared to hitherto unseen levels. While in 2010, only 27% of the users in the UK were on smartphones, in just one year, the figure shot up to 42%. In fact, Android alone registered a staggering growth of 634% year on year.
While iOS leads the OS pack as of now in the UK with 27.1% of the market, Android is right on its heels with 26.7% market share. And going by the current growth rates, iOS doesn’t seem to stand a chance and defend its numero uno status. Symbian is still on the radar – but waning out fast. It however still manages to hold on to 22.5% of the market. This figure is expected to go down dramatically in the next few months.
It would be interesting to see if Nokia does manage to stabilize things in the UK once it’s Windows Phone powered devices start selling later this year.
