Vodafone and Airtel are in a cut throat competition to woo its large base of 2G Internet users on prepaid, it seems. It was just hours ago that Vodafone first announced that it would be slashing its 2G Internet surfing charges by as much as 80%, Airtel in response, has come out and announced a reduction of a whopping 90% on its 2G Internet usage charges on prepaid. Vodafone had announced that its existing rate of 10p/10KB on Internet surfing has been reduced to 2p/10KB. These rates were said to be valid in the states of Karnataka, UP West and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh. Post paid users could also take advantage of these reduced rates on Vodafone.
Airtel, not to be left behind has announced that it would be reducing its charges on prepaid as well. The company said that its Volume Based Charges on recharge vouchers of Rs.22, Rs 25 and Rs.125 has been reduced to 1 paisa per 10 KB from 10 paisa per 10 KB. These vouchers carry a download limit of 125 MB for five days, 150 MB for seven days and 1 GB for 28 days respectively. The slashed rates would come into place AFTER the costumers run out of their (so called!) free usage. Airtel has also said that validity of the Rs 22 and Rs 25 recharge vouchers has been increased to 30 days and that of Rs 125 recharge vouchers increased to 90 days.
Anyway, I am of the firm belief that we in India are still being milked for pathetic 2G speeds which on most occasions is not even good enough to open a simple web page. That said, since we have no option at this moment, any reduction in charges is welcome. Sigh!
