Vodafone seems to be quite upbeat about its 3G prospects in India. in what is seen as a move to attract more youngsters to adopt 3G, the company has announced the launch of a new entry level 3G capable smartphone that runs on Android.
The phone, known as the Vodafone Smart is claimed to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor. It runs Android 2.2.1 which for a phone in its price range is acceptable – although if you go slightly up the price ladder, you can get the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Y which runs Android 2.3 or even the Idea IS 280 with all the data benefits.
The Vodafone Smart is basically a rebadged version of the Huawei U 8160 which Vodafone has customized for itself. It features a decent 2.8 inch capacitive touch screen display with a rather unimpressive resolution of 240*320. It packs in a 2 megapixel camera as well. The RAM is quite sufficient at 256 MB if you happen to be a non-demanding user. While the internal memory is limited, you can always get a micro SD card of up to 32 Gb capacity to expand it.
The phone has been priced at Rs.4995 in India – and as expected, Vodafone will offer an introductory limited period offer to customers of Double Data Benefit on their 3G subscription.
The Vodafone Smart is the second major phone launch from them after the announcement of the Vodafone Blue 555 “Facebook Phone” which happened a few months ago.
