WhatsApp last year announced a way for users on a desktop to access their WhatsApp chats. This was however limited to all those who were on Chrome browser, so if you were running a browser like say Opera or Safari, you could not enjoy WhatsApp. The arrangement also needs you to ensure that your phone was always connected to a live data connection, be it via mobile data or Wi-Fi which kind of defeats the purpose of having the messenger running on your desktop.

It is to fight these issues that WhatsApp is now reportedly working on a standalone application for Macs and Windows. This application will work independently of your smartphone once you will authorize your phone number on your laptop. Once you do that the conversations will be synced you would assume especially as you now have the option of taking the backup of your WhatsApp chats on your Google Drive making the whole process really easy. The news of the standalone apps comes from a Twitter account @WABetaInfo which keeps a track of the upcoming features and beta releases.
While the screenshots look a little rough around the edges, it kind of supports the theory that these are very much in Beta and it could be a while before we have these standalone apps, if at all. WhatsApp has always been notorious for taking their time when it comes to announcing features, but with competitors such Telegram and Hike already on desktop standalone applications, WhatsApp is losing important traction this time. Let’s hope this more than just another flying grapevine and actually comes true.
